Membership
Membership is available to artists through an application and selection process. Members are offered the use of studio space for a period of up to two years. Membership renewal after two years is subject to review by EFA Studios. Members who demonstrate serious financial need will receive subsidized membership rates.
Location
EFA Studios are located in Midtown Manhattan at 323 West 39th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues.
Description and Cost
Studios range in size from 200 to 430 square feet. Ceilings are 11′ high. Membership fees vary according to location, size and shape of the studio assigned to the artist, as well as the artist’s demonstrated financial need. Subsidized membership fees range from $350 to $1,160 per month. Membership fees for artists who have not demonstrated serious financial need average approximately 30% higher. The studios are served by passenger and freight elevators, and provide shared restroom facilities, wash sinks, and common areas equipped with coffee maker, sink, refrigerator and microwave oven. All studios have phone lines, several electric outlets, and individual ventilation and air conditioning. The building is heated by steam-radiators. Normal usage of heat, air-conditioning, electricity and common areas are included in the membership dues. Current dues for membership are $80 per month. Access to the studios is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Eligibility
Visual artists working in all forms of media are eligible. The program is designed for mid-career artists with a developed studio practice and career experience. Applicants cannot be in a college or university degree-granting program. Certain types of work cannot be accommodated for practical reasons. These include large or heavy sculptures, some types of metal work, and work involving high noise levels or fire risk. EFA does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation or marital status. Artists must be citizens of the United States, or must be legal U.S residents during their tenure.
Selection Process
A panel of arts professionals will review applications and select artists. Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work and their potential for making the greatest use of studio space. Selected Applicants will be notified by January 31, 2010. All applicants will be notified by mail. Please do not call the office for selection results.
