Intro to Etching

Beginning Etching is for any artist of any skill level that wants to expand their knowledge of Intaglio processes and take their work in a new direction. This class focuses on creating Intaglio prints from copper plates. It will cover basic etching techniques including: dry point, hardground, and softground, all aspects of plate preparation, and plate making. Students will additionally learn about a selection of printing papers and inks, as well as, learn how to make editions of prints, and how to care for/handle finished prints. All levels of experience welcome.

Jennifer Melby is proprietor of Jennifer Melby Editions, a collaborative studio specializing in intaglio printmaking. The studio opened in the early 1980’s on the Bowery and it is now in downtown Brooklyn, near the Brooklyn Bridge. She has worked on etching projects with notable publishers such as Baron/Boisante, Peter Blum Editions, Brooke Alexander Editions publishing editions by artists Kamrooz Aram, Donald Baechler, Michael Byron, Eric Fischl, Janet Fish, Jane Freilicher, Joanne Greenbaum, Isca Greenfield-Sanders, Red Grooms, and many more. Jennifer Melby has taught at Pratt Institute, Yale University, and the Lower East Side Printshop, and has led workshops at Brandeis, Cooper Union, Lehman College, and Rhode Island School of Design.
