Heejung Cho
My work is a mix of physical sites and cultures of different cities to express anonymity and particularity of urban life. My experience of living in NYC as an immigrant artist fuels to create my own city having memory and emotion. Although I live in New York City physically, I feel like residing in Seoul, Korea emotionally and mentally at the same time. The change of location causes the change of language, culture, perspective, social ability and personality. Recreating streets and buildings of different cities with subjective eyes and personal experiences, the reconstructed cityscape represents the multilayered displacement of culture and the loss of time and memory.
Using woodcarving and painting, I create thin sculptures or 3 dimensional paintings having relief and sometimes integrate them to be installations according to their relation. I cut silhouettes of buildings and glue thin woods onto the panel to make architectural elements. The exaggerated perspective of streets and buildings gives an optical illusion between 2dimension and 3dimension and a sense of alienation from the ephemeral reality.
